Our History.

In the early years, the Fig-3 Choir which was comprised of choir members from St. Margaret church, Seria; St. James’s Church, Kuala Belait and St. Columba’s Church, Miri.

The Birth of FIG 3.

When I was attached in St. Columba’s Church I was helping the English Choir for a month few years ago, I had this vision of why not gathered committed members who were keen in serving the Lord through singing? So Iprayed and seek God what sort of Choir He wants me to form. One day when I wasreading the bible, there was a part mentioned of the Promised Land was described as a land of vines and fig trees. All of a sudden, I went a little bit further and wanting to find out a little more detail regarding fig tree. I came to know that fig tree was not like the other trees I used to know in my country. A fig tree is able to live to a great age and able to reach a very considerable size. It thick rigid leaves give a dense share. Unlike other trees, it puts forth its fruiting steams before its leaf buds expands. Most of all the fruits are not tempting but it taste delicious. So, the Holy Spirit speaks to me in a very little small voice helping and giving me some vision what sort of Choir that God wants me to form. So, in 2003, we formed the Fig 3 choir based in St. Colomba’s Church, Miri. We dedicated ourselves as God’s instruments one Sunday during the time of Rev. Nelson, the Vicar. My duties were to lead, to guide and to teach.

The Purposes Of FIG 3.

It says that the fig tree “lives to a great age and able to reach avery considerable size”

(2a) I believe that there should not be any age limitation when come to serving the Lord. In the same way, God is also saying to us, if He has given you a voice to sing and to praise Him, why not exercise that gift which He has bestowed upon you? Never say to yourself that you are either too old or too young to sing to the Lord! If you love God and if you love singing no matter where you are than you should come together with others and sing to the Lord a new song.

(02) For a fig tree to reach a very considerable size it needs nutrition and good soil. Same thing goes to the choir. Vocal training and others mean to improve ourselves are very important but what is the use if one lacks of commitment and discipline. I am not a good teacher because I over looked many things during the choir practice. However, I always remind the choir members that we are singing to God Himself and not to the congregation. In order for us to sing in one voice, one mind and one soul during the practices, we need to see and understand our role as a choir member! We are not just presenting ourselves but we want to present to the people that they can see God through us each time when we present the songs. Thus, if you don’t believe in HIM in your heart, how are you able to sing to HIM?

The Mission Of FIG 3.

Why 3 and not tree?

The answer is simple because we need God to direct, Christ to unite us and the Holy Spirit to strengthen us to make us alive in our singing. Thus, from 2003 to 2005, our theme is ONE CHURCH, ONE VOICE and ONE MISSION. We have sung in St. Columba’s Church in Miri, Good Shepherd Parish in Lutong, St. James in Kuala Belait and St. Margaret’s in Seria.

For 2006 to 20XX, we come up with the theme of “Reach Out”, “Pull Together” and “Be Fruitful”.

One Church, Fig3 Choir is a choir within Parish Choir. Fig3 is simply adopt the method of ToT, training of to build a group of qualified instructors who can then teach others. Learning music is not cheap, so Fig3provide music seminar with the help of music teachers and skillful lay people to help in training and thus they are able to train the church choir

One Voice, Fig3 does not looking at only adult members but to Children and Teens. Gathering these 3 age group, Fig3 hope to encourage the Parish Choir will continue to sing. Fig3 also encouraging parents to send their children to help out in playing the music. This can be Sape, Guitars, Ukulele, Piano, Violin etc. If you have skill in communicating with the deaf using Sign Language (SEE/ASL), you are also most welcome. Fig 3 also encouraging the young people to learn Sign Songs, Sign Dance even Story telling using Sign Language.

One Mission, so at the end, Fig 3’s mission to grow more God’s children continue to serve in God’s kingdom. In saying this, Fig3 strongly believe that, a persons need to believe in Jesus Christ in his life otherwise, the singing that will not truly come from his heart. Romans 10:9 states, “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesusis Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (NET). The key word is “Believe”.
